Cleaning your Diamond and Gold Jewellery

To ensure your diamonds last forever without losing sparkle, cleaning them correctly and regularly is essential.

Whilst you are wearing your diamond rings, earrings, pendants or bracelets, they can pick up dust and dirt. If jewellery is stored away without being cleaned, it could lead to oxidation or discolouration of the gold. Regular cleaning will also help restore the diamond’s shine.

To clean your diamond jewellery:

1. Put them in a bowl with warm water mixed with a small amount of washing-up liquid.
2. Soak them for several minutes. After that, gently brush them over with a soft bristle toothbrush paying attention to the diamond’s edges and the prongs holding the stone to remove any grime build-up.
3. Be extra careful when cleaning eternity and half-eternity rings, engagement rings with small diamonds on the band and diamond bracelets.
4. After cleaning, rinse the jewellery with warm water. If you are rinsing them over a wash basin or sink, make sure you close the drain.
5. Gently dry your diamond jewellery pieces one by one with a lint-free cloth to ensure they are completely dry before you store them away.

Never use harsh chemicals such as household cleaners or abrasives such as toothpaste to clean your jewellery, as this could damage the gold or other precious metal the diamond is set in.

Ultrasonic cleaners are another great way to remove grime and dirt build-up on diamond jewellery. However, whilst it’s perfectly fine to use them from time to time, they should not be used frequently. This is because the fast vibration they create could potentially cause the diamond to loosen in its settings.

Extra Cleaning Tip

We recommend wiping your earring posts and the butterfly pushbacks or screwbacks with clean tissue paper sprayed with a bit of alcohol spray between wears for hygiene reasons.

Soap can cause a layer of film to build up over time, making a diamond appear dull, so make sure you don’t wear your jewellery while bathing or showering.

Cosmetic products can also affect the diamond, so remove your rings and earrings before applying skincare products and makeup.

Chlorinated water and salty water could react with gold and other precious metals, causing oxidation and discolouration, potentially damaging the prongs that hold the diamond, so never wear your diamond jewellery in the pool or the sea.

Harsh chemicals can damage jewellery, so remember to take off your diamond ring before using bleach and other household cleaning products.

First and foremost, ensure your diamond jewellery is kept in a dry place, away from humidity and direct sunlight, when you are not wearing them. This will protect the diamond and prevent the gold that holds it from tarnishing. Clean and dry your jewellery as described above before storing it away.

Keep your jewellery in specialised storage boxes with multiple compartments. They are usually lined with velvet fabric, so you can keep your diamond and gold jewellery safe and beautifully organised, both at home or when travelling.
